The main musical motif for the album is set out early on in the opening track – an instrumental called \u003cem\u003eHope This Finds You.\u003c\/em\u003e Played on viola by Becca King, the theme is restated briefly in \u003cem\u003ePick Up If You’re There \u003c\/em\u003ebefore returning at the end of the album in the closing section of \u003cem\u003eSummer’s Lease\u003c\/em\u003e.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOther musical motifs abound, some buried deeply in the music, some combining with others to form new themes. For example, the main album theme on the playout of \u003cem\u003eSummer’s Lease i\u003c\/em\u003es intertwined with a motif from \u003cem\u003ePerfect Cosmic Storm\u003c\/em\u003e which is initially set out in an understated manner on electric piano, before returning as the grand closing section of the song. Amongst the epic long-form tracks, there are some short ambient pieces, intended to add atmosphere to the album. \u003cem\u003eBreathing Space\u003c\/em\u003e is exactly that, a short interlude between two longer pieces, and\u003cem\u003e From The Wide Open Sea\u003c\/em\u003e is an excerpt from the track \u003cem\u003eThe Wide Open Sea\u003c\/em\u003e, which was eventually released on the \u003cem\u003eFar Skies Deep Time\u003c\/em\u003e EP.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003eThe Difference Machine\u003c\/em\u003e saw BBT’s first involvement with Nick D’Virgilio who subsequently became the band’s drummer. Nick played drums on \u003cem\u003ePerfect Cosmic Storm\u003c\/em\u003e and \u003cem\u003ePick Up If You’re There \u003c\/em\u003efor what was intended to be a special edition of the album with alternative versions of some of the songs.
