{"title":"Red Kite","description":"\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eRed Kite was formed in 2013 by drummer Torstein Lofthus, guitarist Even Helte Hermansen, and bassist Trond Frønes, after the latter had just moved to Oslo, and wanted to jam. Frønes and Hermansen already knew each other from projects such as Grand General, whereas Lofthus and Hermansen had previously played together quite a bit in the BlackJazz and Grindstone-days of Shining. Not wanting to stick it out as trio with day jobs such as Elephant9 and Bushman’s Revenge, they decided to add their old friend, and fellow Shining alumni, Bernt Moen on keys, thus rounding out the band’s original line-up. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe band played their first gig in 2014, and released their first record in 2019, originally focusing on more or less straight jazz rock from the 70’s. However, this focus naturally started to shift over time, towards more 60’s jazz like Alice Coltrane – only, of course played with electric instruments, by lovers of very loud, heavy music. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTheir second record \u003cem\u003eApopheninan Bliss \u003c\/em\u003ewas released in 2021, and the band started touring more for the first time, even thought it was in the middle of the pandemic, thus further refining their own musical vision. Tempos became somewhat slower, while the shows became louder and longer, inspiring tongue in cheek catch phrases like “jazz – for, and by rockers”, and “doom jazz”. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn 2023 and 2024 the band started collaborating and doing some shows with long another longtime friend, saxophonist Gisle Johansen. Johansen, already a legend of the Norwegian jazz scene since the 90’s, inspiring bands like Atomic and The Thing through his work with his own band Element, brought even more power, along with an acoustic edge in the vein of John Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders to the proceedings,\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cem\u003eas well\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003eas being a long time Slayer fan. Big smiles were seen on stage, and this was also meant to be the line-up heading into the band’s third record. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn 2025, as the band were getting ready to get back into the studio, they were dealt a major blow: After a couple of postponements, Bernt Moen finally head to step down due to health issues. This was very a sad thing for everybody involved. Well, we've been all over the place, and back again several times already, through the years. This time we wanted to explore more of a \"pop\" direction. That is \"pop\" with a massive disclaimer. There's perhaps a little more emphasis on shorter songs, simpler melodies, and \"poppy\" rhythms, and slightly less of the rock and the free jazz influences this time. We even do a cover of Stina Nordenstam's cover of Purple Rain! But never the less, it's still very much a Bushman's Revenge album, as weird as ever. We're also old farts by this point, who have no idea what the kids are into. We just played some music, and shared a lot of laughs, basically. And then we were lucky enough to have Gard's friend, the great Johan Lindström, added some pedal steel to a few of the tracks later on. What kind of musical direction this time? Well, we've been all over the place, and back again several times already, through the years. This time we wanted to explore more of a \"pop\" direction. That is \"pop\" with a massive disclaimer. There's perhaps a little more emphasis on shorter songs, simpler melodies, and \"poppy\" rhythms, and slightly less of the rock and the free jazz influences this time. We even do a cover of Stina Nordenstam's cover of Purple Rain! But never the less, it's still very much a Bushman's Revenge album, as weird as ever. We're also old farts by this point, who have no idea what the kids are into.
