The Tangent

The Tangent is a progressive/jazz rock collective led by composer and lyricist Andy Tillison from the North of England. The band has been active for nearly 25 years - releasing 14 studio and 3 live albums. They aspire to provide the type of imaginative and cinematic music that was created by the great progressive bands of the 1970s like Yes, Van Der Graaf Generator, Return To Forever and ELP. They are also focused on being a modern, alert and relevant contemporary band whose musical influences span centuries of progression and whose influences are still being gathered from a wealth of styles and sources which did not even exist when their forebears were writing.

It's important to stress that The Tangent is not exclusively providing a nostalgia trip, either musically or lyrically. The band's ongoing philosophy is (in the original spirit of progressive rock) a counter-culture philosophy which aligns itself with the concepts of peace, equality, and freedom of choice. Many of the original bands were born out of a time of student protests, the growth of CND, the war in Vietnam, and the massive concept of sexual freedom. As many of these truly progressive concepts become more at threat, The Tangent sees its role as a commentary on life in the here and now. And it's a rollercoaster ride.
