John Holden – The Great Divide (CD)
UK composer and multi-instrumentalist John Holden returns with his sixth album The Great Divide.
The world is full of monumental divides; cultural, political, generational, Holden says.
However, when the divide is between two people, it becomes all-consuming, shrinking everything else into background noise. Each step draws closer to that chasm. This thread runs through several songs on the album and asks the question: What happens when love that once felt authored with intention fades into margins and we become footnotes in our own story?

When it comes to composing for a new album, I have no idea what is going to happen. It is always a surprise and when the project is completed as I am never sure how it this creative process has occurred, it’s a mystery, Holden adds. I think the songs and ideas are often coloured by life at that moment in time, world events and sometimes more personal thoughts and interests. One idea that inspired me was the concepts of Art Nouveau. The way it intertwines the symbolism of nature with vulnerability but also strength. That became a catalyst for the music; moments of restraint, followed by something bold. An echo chamber for those ideas: These songs reside where these opposites meet.
