Kate Hinote Trio - Near (CD)
The debut album from the Kate Hinote Trio, Near, presents 11 tracks of melodic and moody acoustic music featuring Kate Hinote on vocals, Matthew Parmenter on violin, and David Johnson on acoustic guitar.
Based out of Detroit area, the Trio began playing together in the fall of 2019 and quickly discovered a unique chemistry and sound that Hinote was determined to record. In February 2020, with Hinote’s husband, longtime bandmate and writing partner, Tony Hamera, at the board, they headed into Tempermill Studios in Ferndale, MI. Despite live music being put on hold, the Trio kept at it after a brief hiatus and finished the album with a final session with Hamera in December 2020.
Near includes songs co-written by Kate Hinote for other projects she has fronted, including Alt-Country turned Psych-Rock outfit, Blueflowers, as well as songs by other Detroit-based songwriters that were gifted to Hinote or borrowed for this album, including Matthew Smith, Emily Rose, Don Duprie and Alison Lewis, Anthony Retka, Duende, and Jaye Allen Thomas.
Singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, Matthew Parmenter (front man of Prog-Rock band Discipline), whose expressive and melodic violin provides the perfect accompaniment to Hinote’s voice, also contributed a song of his own to the album in the dramatic closer, Some Fear Growing Old. The previously released single, Moon Draws Water, for which David Johnson (Blueflowers) has co-writing credit, is just one example of Johnson’s ability to form a unique and solid foundation for Hinote to deliver each song with care. Near also reveals the first songwriting collaboration for Hinote and Parmenter, the Prog-Folk track, Where You Dream Now.
