Apogee
Apogee is the solo progressive rock project of German musician Arne Schäfer, best known as the lead singer and guitarist of the band Versus X, Formed in 1995, Apogee is a one-man band in the sense that Schäfer plays all instruments except the acoustic drums, which have been handled by various guest drummers over the years, including Uwe Völlmar, Thomas Reiner, and his brother Eberhard Gräf.
Schäfer’s work is rooted in progressive rock with a strong emphasis on the compositional and orchestral elements of 1970s prog, drawing inspiration from bands like Yes, Genesis, Gentle Giant, Jethro Tull, and ELP, as well as classical composers like Prokofiev and Stravinsky and Prokofiev. His music often features:
- Complex, multi-part compositions exceeding 10 minutes
- Unusual time signatures and mystical, atmospheric moods
- Heavy use of guitar solos and vocal interplay
- Orchestral arrangements and jazz-rock improvisations
