Far Skies Deep Time was recorded to fill some time whilst David and Greg finished writing songs for the English Electric albums. Most of the songs started as offcuts or unfinished pieces from previous album writing sessions. A considerable amount of additional writing took place to complete the songs. Whilst the original version of Far Skies Deep Time was over 40 minutes in length, it was always described by the band as an EP as they did not wish it to be considered the next studio album after The Underfall Yard. The 2017reissue version (featuring six rather than five songs) is almost 50 minutes’ long, but is still considered by the band to be an EP.
